The ASEKOL compliance scheme award is given to the municipality achieving the highest rate of take-back of worn-out and obsolete electronics, such as IT and telecommunications equipment, toys, medical devices, monitoring and control instruments, and consumer equipment, including televisions and computer monitors.

This year saw the fifth annual competition among schools within Prague 4 in collecting mobile phones.

The Crown per Kilo project is starting in March. This is a joint activity of the ASEKOL compliance scheme for e-waste take-back and the Czech National Disability Council (CNDC). For each kilogram of old e-waste people place into red containers from 1 March until the end of the year, the Rovná šance (Equal Chance) Endowment Fund, managed by the CNDC, will receive one crown. The project endeavours to support people with disabilities in acquiring employment.

The concept of extended producer responsibility (EPR) was first proposed in Sweden in 1990 by Professor Thomas Lindhqvist, a specialist in environmental issues at Lund University. Extended producer responsibility was defined as a strategy for products to have as little negative effect on the environment as possible by extending producers’ responsibility across products’ entire life cycles, and in particular to include take-back, recycling and final disposal of such products. The EPR strategy gradually became a part of EU legislation, and from there it spread to all member states. Today, it is one of the main pillars of waste management within the EU.

Last year, ASEKOL decided to include even more sheltered workshops than previously in processing old electronics, and it issued an open tender for processing an additional 1,000 tonnes of e-waste.

An event focused on collecting worn-out and obsolete electrical appliances will take place at Ostrava’s collection yards in October.

A special event to support collection of small electronics is currently underway in the Liberec and Ústí nad Labem regions at selected red containers.

More than 2,000 people rocked on Saturday night at a concert at Lucerna.

The large autumn campaign organised by ASEKOL to support red containers begins on 4 September. The promotional tour will inform inhabitants of Czech cities in an entertaining and competitive way about the existence of the red containers, their location, their method of use, and the benefits of recycling small electronics.
